A super-rare Breguet wristwatch, once owned by Hollywood designer Paul Iribe, a former lover of Coco Chanel, is to be sold at auction. “The most complicated man I ever knew was Paul Iribe,” said Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel, of the man who was once her lover and collaborator.
Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel, friend of artist Jean Cocteau and lover of musician Igor Stravinsky, transformed women’s fashion across the world. Pablo Picasso said of her: “Chanel is the woman. Iribe was closely associated with Coco Chanel, collaborating on a number of creative projects, including her first high jewelry collection. Their relationship was both deeply personal and professional, lasting until Iribe’s untimely death in 1935.
Things weren’t much better back home – Chanel’s greatest competitor in the perfume business, François Coty, founded a far-right movement which claimed 80,000 members in Paris alone. For this reason, when Chanel met a new lover in 1934, the fashionable illustrator Paul Iribe, his breathtaking anti-Semitism wasn’t a dealbreaker.
By the 1930s Iribe had moved back to Frances and began working on numerous projects, including books, furniture design, and jewellery. He became romantically involved with fashion designer Coco Chanel. She became his muse, often drawing women in her likeness for his journal Le Témoin.He continued to design jewelry, working with Coco Chanel in 1932 to create a line that her couture house produced. In 1933 Iribe was awarded la Légion d'honneur for his work as an artist-illustrator. He died of a heart attack in 1935 at Chanel's villa in Roquebrune Cap Martin, France.
He designed the Lanvin emblem, representing Jeanne Lanvin dressed for a ball with her daughter Marie-Blanche at her knee, and costume jewellery for Coco Chanel, who became a close friend and, in 1935, founded the magazine Le Mot.
