It seems like the overall consensus is that the case is very tough, but it's arch nemesis is a tall fall onto a hard surface. If you can avoid doing that, I'm sure you could make a GSOM or DSOM last a very, very long time.

Sure they likely have Chinese manufactured cases that are then sent back to Switzerland for assembly. With the requirement that 60% of the value of the watch has to be manufactured in Switzerland in order to be "Swiss . The heft of the box makes it a great home solution but not a very practical traveling companion. The best solution I have found for traveling is the new Patek H997 Travel Case (not sure if other brands have them also). It’s small, well built and offers great protection for these works of wonder.
The watch cases were done more to American tastes as well. More 14K and plated/filled cases which were banned in some European countries. Only thing that changed after WWII, is that the Swiss movement companies (like Omega, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Longines, etc.) started getting into the act. The genuine Omega comes packaged in a sealed, 2 part, thick plastic pouch with a movement retaining ring in the 2nd compartment. The other case doesn’t include a retaining ring. The genuine case was made by Schmitz Freres while the other has a Huguenin Freres trademark stamp. Here are 2 photos of the genuine Omega case sold by an Omega parts .
